Ultherapy vs Thermage
vs Potenza Korea:
Which One Is
Right for You?

Comparison Guide·2,300 words·11 min read

Three devices. Three mechanisms. Three different layers of the skin. Most patients arrive already having picked one — usually based on name recognition. This guide compares them on what actually matters: depth, mechanism, and which concern each one genuinely solves.

The Core Question —
Depth

Ultherapy vs Thermage vs Potenza Korea skin layers comparison Yaan Clinic Gangnam

The most common mistake patients make when comparing these three devices is treating them as competitors. They’re not, really. Ultherapy, Thermage FLX, and Potenza each target a different layer of the skin — and that’s the comparison that actually matters.

Ultherapy reaches the SMAS layer at 4.5mm. Thermage heats the dermis volumetrically. Potenza works from the epidermis down through the upper dermis, depth adjustable by tip. Pick the wrong device for your concern and the results will disappoint — not because the device failed, but because it was solving a different problem.

Device Technology Target Depth Primary Goal
Ultherapy Prime Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) SMAS layer — 4.5mm, 3.0mm, 1.5mm Structural lifting — jawline, brow, cheek, neck
Thermage FLX Monopolar RF Dermis & subcutaneous tissue Tightening, elasticity, surface contour
Potenza RF Bipolar/Monopolar RF + Microneedling Epidermis to dermis — 0.5–4.0mm Texture, pores, scarring, regeneration

02

Ultherapy Prime —
Deep Structural Lifting

Ultherapy is the only non-invasive lifting device FDA-cleared for lifting the brow, chin, neck, and décolletage. The reason it works for structural lifting — and the other two don’t — comes down to one thing: it reaches the SMAS.

The SMAS (Superficial Musculo-Aponeurotic System) is the same layer a surgeon tightens in a traditional facelift. Focused ultrasound bypasses the skin surface entirely and creates thermal coagulation points at that depth. The tissue heats to 60–70°C, triggering a wound-healing response — new collagen and elastin form over the following 2–3 months, gradually lifting sagging structures.

01

Ultherapy face lift effect

Structural lifting of sagging cheeks and mid-face. Results develop over 2–3 months as new collagen matures — not an overnight fix, but a real structural change.

02

Ultherapy jawline

Tightens the SMAS beneath the jaw, sharpening definition and reducing jowl appearance. Yaan Clinic’s Ulthera Fit adds Tune liner for fat cell removal when needed.

03

Ultherapy brow lift

FDA-cleared specifically for brow elevation. One of the most consistent and visible results — patients notice hooding reduces and eyes appear more open.

04

Ultherapy double chin

SMAS tightening lifts the submental area structurally. For patients with actual fat deposit, combination with Tune liner produces more complete results than Ultherapy alone.

Ultherapy Prime vs standard Ultherapy

Prime is the current generation — more consistent energy delivery and tighter coagulation point formation than the original device. All treatments at Yaan Clinic use Ultherapy Prime. The difference shows up in how reliably results develop across different skin types and session intervals.

03

Thermage FLX —
Volumetric Tightening

Thermage FLX doesn’t lift structure — it tightens what’s already there. Monopolar RF heats the dermis uniformly across the treatment area, causing existing collagen fibers to contract immediately while stimulating long-term remodeling. The result is firmer, smoother skin with improved surface contour.

The distinction from Ultherapy matters clinically. Where Ultherapy creates focused coagulation points at depth, Thermage delivers “bulk heating” across the dermis. Better for overall skin laxity and texture. Not the right tool for structural sagging or SMAS-level lifting.

Thermage FLX — best for

Surface Tightening

Loose skin on face and neck · Fine lines and surface texture · Loss of overall skin elasticity · Contour smoothing without structural lifting

  • Same-day recovery — no downtime
  • Results develop over 3–6 months
  • Annual maintenance session recommended

Thermage FLX — not ideal for

Structural Lifting

Significant jawline sagging · Deep structural laxity · Brow elevation · Double chin (submental area) requiring SMAS-level correction

  • These concerns respond better to Ultherapy Prime
  • Thermage complements Ultherapy — it doesn’t replace it

04

Potenza RF —
Texture, Pores, Regeneration

Potenza is a different category entirely. It’s not a lifting device — it’s a texture and regeneration device. Ultra-fine microneedles physically penetrate the skin and deliver RF energy directly into the dermis. Two things happen at once: micro-channels that trigger tissue regeneration, and RF heat that promotes collagen synthesis and pore tightening.

The versatility is what makes Potenza interesting. Four different RF modes, adjustable needle depth from 0.5mm to 4.0mm, and a Pumping Tip (CP-25) that delivers skin boosters like Juvelook or Exosomes deep into the skin during treatment. For patients combining Potenza with a collagen biostimulator, the results on texture and skin quality are significantly amplified.

Concern Potenza Response Notes
Enlarged pores Very consistent Non-insulated tips for uniform surface treatment
Acne scarring (shallow) Consistent Insulated tips protect epidermis, target scar depth
Skin texture Consistent 2–3 sessions for measurable improvement
Melasma / pigmentation Moderate Best when combined with appropriate booster
Deep acne scars (ice-pick) Limited Requires additional fractional laser modality
Structural sagging Not indicated Use Ultherapy Prime for SMAS-level concerns

05

Which Device for
Which Concern

The decision is simpler than most patients expect once you map concern to layer. The profiles below reflect the most common patient types at Yaan Clinic and which device — or combination — typically fits each.

  • Overall skin laxity, fine lines → Thermage FLX

If the skin feels loose and tired but there’s no significant structural drop yet, Thermage FLX is often the more appropriate starting point. It tightens, smooths, and restores elasticity across the dermis without the recovery period of Potenza. Good for patients in their late 30s to early 40s with mild-to-moderate surface laxity.

  • Pores, acne scars, texture → Potenza

Potenza is the right tool when the concern is surface quality — not laxity. Enlarged pores, shallow acne scarring, rough texture, uneven skin tone. Often combined with Juvelook or Exosome boosters for amplified regeneration. Not a lifting device — don’t use it expecting jawline results.

  • Multiple concerns → combination protocol

The most comprehensive outcomes come from layering. Ultherapy Prime for structural lift → Thermage FLX to tighten the overlying dermis → Potenza for texture and regeneration. These three devices don’t interfere — they work at different depths. Protocol and sequencing are determined after 3D MetaView analysis at Yaan Clinic. See Post 02: Korea Clinic Guide →

Frequently Asked
Questions

What is the difference between Ultherapy and Thermage?
Different tools for different layers. Ultherapy uses focused ultrasound to reach the SMAS — the deep structural layer — lifting the jawline, brow, and cheeks from below. Thermage FLX uses monopolar RF to heat the dermis uniformly, tightening and smoothing the skin’s surface. If the concern is structural sagging, Ultherapy. Surface laxity and texture, Thermage. Many patients at Yaan Clinic use both in sequence for complete results.

Is Ultherapy better than Thermage for jawline lifting?
For jawline definition specifically, Ultherapy Prime has the edge. It reaches the SMAS at 4.5mm — the same depth targeted in surgical facelifts — producing a structural lift that Thermage’s dermal heating can’t replicate. Thermage complements by tightening the overlying skin. For significant jawline sagging, the combination delivers more complete results than either alone.

What is Ultherapy Prime vs standard Ultherapy?
Prime is the upgraded generation — more consistent energy delivery and tighter coagulation point formation than the original Ulthera. At Yaan Clinic, all treatments use Ultherapy Prime exclusively, not older hardware. The difference shows in how reliably results develop across different skin types and across multiple sessions.

Can Ultherapy and Thermage be done together in Korea?
Yes — and it’s a common protocol at Yaan Clinic. Ultherapy Prime lifts the deep structure (SMAS), Thermage FLX tightens the overlying dermis. The two work at different depths and don’t interfere. Particularly effective for patients with both structural sagging and surface laxity. Session sequencing and interval are confirmed after 3D skin analysis.

Which is better for double chin — Ultherapy or Thermage?
Ultherapy Prime is generally the primary choice. It reaches the SMAS layer and produces structural tightening in the neck and jawline area. For double chin with accompanying fat deposit, Yaan Clinic’s Ulthera Fit package adds Tune liner — which selectively removes fat cells to contour the jawline alongside the SMAS lift. Thermage plays a supporting role in smoothing the skin surface after structural correction.
